Adrift on Chrysos, a sprawling dimension of powerful deities, Steele discovers that the afterlife was not at all what he expected. He learns that gods come in many forms, distinguished by a system of castes. Alchemists can manipulate matter, Assassins possess dominion over darkness, Rangers command the skies, while Hunters and Slingers rule over nature and technology. Steele tries his best to navigate this new world where advanced science and mysticism converge. But as his own godlike powers start to develop, he fights to protect the family he has left behind in his prior life from a demented pursuer who threatens to bring anguish to their mortal lives.
Chrome was born on Chrysos and hails from the proud caste of Assassins. She kills deities and enjoys it, but the assassinations only serve to distract her from a growing concern. She harbors a secret, whose truth lies in her hidden abilities as a Rogue, that has cost her everything, including her mother and her homeland. Suffering in silence has made her into the deity she has become–skilled and feared as the most talented Assassin in her guild. But she now wishes to take matters into her own hands by ridding herself of an ancient deity tied to her secret, which, if discovered, could put her own immortality at risk.
Forced to team up for this era’s Paradiso Trials, Chrome now must rely on Steele to aid in her mission. Deities from every world on Chrysos come to contend, seeking the rumored prize said to grant the winner unimaginable influence over distant, mortal worlds. Through the Trials, Steele hopes to gain the power to protect his family while Chrome longs to settle a vendetta with the ancient deity who haunts her dreams. Regardless of their motives, the pair quickly learn that the decisions they make now will challenge the order of Chrysos for eternity, or for what most deities like to call a lifetime.
